LME copper off highs by midsession, others quiet
LONDON, Sept 4 (Reuter) - Copper was the main feature on the
London Metal Exchange (LME) up to the midsession as a rally up
to $2,070 per tonne found option-related and forward selling
which briefly knocked prices below $2,000.
Benchmark three months moved down to $1,990 before renewed
buying and short-covering lifted prices to end the morning at
$2,007, against Tuesday's $2,040 kerb close.
"The selling started to creep in after calls at $2,100
failed to be triggered," one floor trader said.
Traders said lending of tight nearby spreads and brisk cash
selling in the official rings also helped to undermine the
market.
But copper seems to have settled into a new higher range
after recently overcoming stiff resistance at $1,970. This level
is offering good downside support.
Resistance is pegged at the recent 2-1/2 month high of
$2,165, followed by $2,200, analysts said.
The other base metals failed to react seriously to the
unwinding of the copper market.
Aluminium dipped slightly but continued to find support at
$1,500.
Traders said a breach of this level could see a retracement
to $1,490 where consumer buying is expected to emerge.
Last business was at $1,506, versus $1,505.
Nickel slipped from a high of $7,630 after recent
option-related buying. It was last at $7,540, down $10.
Investment fund buying underpinned lead which found trade
selling above $820. Traders noted news that Metaleurop restarted
its Nordenham lead smelter in Germany.
Zinc high moved $3 higher to $1,036, while tin settled
unchanged at $6,250.
Alloy was quoted unchanged at $1,290/95.
