LME copper up at midday but struggles above $1,900
LONDON, Sept 18 (Reuter) - Copper prices rose on the London
Metal Exchange (LME) on Wednesday, but the market appeared to be
struggling to sustain its rally above the psychological
$1,900-a-tonne barrier, traders said.
Three month copper futures finished the morning session at
$1,901, up $31 from Tuesday's afternoon kerb close but well off
the high so far of $1,918.
The market started to rally late on Tuesday, led by Comex
buying and investment bank interest. The rise triggered short
covering in London, but there was a reluctance to chase values
higher.
Physical traders said demand for LME copper warrants in
Europe had picked up recently, reflecting shipments to the Far
East and merchant stockbuilding.
"This is all a result of the easing of the backwardation,
which is now virtually flat," said one copper merchant. "People
are now prepared to take stock positions."
Cash was last indicated at around level with three month
values from a small premium at the close on Tuesday.
Technically, support is pegged at $1,895 down to $1,885
based on a gap. If copper holds, a bullish island reversal
pattern will be left, chartists said.
Other base metals followed copper's lead, moving higher in
early trade before easing towards the end of the session.
Aluminium finished $6.50 higher at $1,423. Traders said some
consolidation was needed after recent losses, but remained
nervous of a test and break below the key $1,400 level.
Nickel fell $40 to $7,380 despite notching a $7,540 high
early on. Key support was pegged at $7,350, below which a move
towards $7,000 was possible.
Lead rose, reversing recent sharp declines. The market ended
$9 higher at $781, but major trendline support was broken at
$785 on Tuesday and was now offering resistance, traders said.
Zinc rose $8 to $1,033, while tin rose to $6,100/10 from
$6,070.
Alloy was last indicated at $1,235/40 from $1,235.
