LME copper saunters higher by midday
LONDON, Sept 26 (Reuter) - Copper made additional upside
progress on Thursday morning, with some dealers anticipating
short-term tightness.
Three months copper touched $1,934 a tonne before running
into a bit of cash selling in the second morning ring. But the
market recovered strongly to end the kerb at $1,930, up $8 from
Wednesday's afternoon kerb.
The short-term outlook is tighter than expected, leading
many traders to expect a healthy draw in stocks on Friday.
"I've seen an awful lot of warrant sales lately," one floor
trader said.
This runs against the view of some players who were still
holding on to a bearish prognosis due to the expected glut of
additional production that was seen coming on stream from now
throughout 1997.
The cash/threes spread was little changed from Wednesday
afternoon, last indicated at a $2/5 contango.
Nickel surged on the kerb up to $7,315, but ran into
resistance and retreated back to $7,290 by the end of the
morning, a gain of $30.
Resistance was pegged at recent highs of $7,310 on Tuesday
and $7,340 on Monday.
The strength surprised some chartists who expected a bearish
cross of the 10- and 30-day moving averages to pressure prices
and lead to a challenge of support at $7,200/20 which has held
the downside for the past three days.
Aluminium solidified its position above Wednesday's kerb
close of $1,400, ending $8 higher, but baulked at confronting
interim resistance at $1,410.
The others were ended the kerb little changed in lacklustre
trade.
Tin, which has been in a downtrend since touching $6,310 on
August 30, finished the kerb unchanged at $6,085 after holding
to a tight range.
Zinc tried to move higher, scoring $1,020 at one point
before closing $1 stronger at $1,019.
Nearby support was pegged at $1,016/18, resistance at
$1,023.
Lead was untraded on the kerb but was marked slightly higher
to $781/83 from Wednesday's $779.
Support was seen at $772/74, then at Monday's two-month low
of $764, with resistance at $784/5.
Alloy was a touch higher at $1,235 versus $1,225/30.
