But the ease with which main resistance at $1,950 was defended suggested to traders that the rally was unlikely to be maintained. "It looks like we may spend a day or two in the $1,925 to $1,950 range but there does not seem to be enough interest to take it much higher," said one dealer. Traders said bank selling and profit-taking was capping the market. The catalyst for this week's break above $1,900 was the larger-than-expected fall in LME stocks on Tuesday and covering ahead of the October options declaration next Wednesday. Prices rose sharply in the run-up to the September declaration as traders scrambled for cover against short upside call option exposure, and traders were keen to avoid a repeat of the loss-making excercise. "But I undertand options traders are a bit calmer about the exposure in October," said a dealer. If stocks fell sharply again on Friday, copper could make the break above $1,950, one trader said. Other base metals put in a lacklustre performance despite copper's gains. Aluminium finished at $1,400, unchanged from Tuesday. The market was still reluctant to move away from the key psychological level as physical offtake remained muted. Only light consumer buying was noted this week on the LME despite the market hovering around 2-1/4 year lows. Nickel prices gained $35 to $7,260 in response to a firmer copper market, and tin edged $10 higher to $6,060. Lead was indicated a shade firmer at $782/84 from $780, with physical offtake in Europe slow to pick up. Physical traders and producers said the European market remained roughly in balance, but stock rises were weighing on values in the short term. A cold winter could soon mop up any excess, they said. Zinc business was slow, with values rising $3 to $1,021. Alloy was last indicated at $1,227/32 from $1,225. FRANCUSKA BURZA KOVINA - 25. rujna 1996.
