LME steadier at midsession, slight correction
LONDON, Sept 13 (Reuter) - Base metal trading was
comparatively slow during Friday's official LME sessions, as
prices of copper and aluminium looked to consolidate after this
week's sell-offs, traders said.
Both metals were holding comfortably above their lows - two
months for copper and two years for aluminium - aided by some
expected end-week covering and constructive inventory data.
But the rallies may be limited, given that there has been
speculative pressure on both markets recently.
Copper again displayed resilience above the option-sensitive
$1,850/1,860 band, with a 1,325-tonne stock fall much as
forecast but supportive nevertheless.
By the end of the kerb prices were trading at $1,869, a $17
gain from Thursday's closing kerb. Further advances may be
difficult to secure, and the downside remains favoured, they
said.
The aluminium market edged away from the $1,430 level, with
the 75-tonne stock rise so small as to be basically unchanged.
This market is also likely to veer lower once the
mini-correction runs its course, traders said. Last morning
business was at $1,437, up $2 from yesterday.
The nickel market was underpinned by caution over the Inco
labour dispute, with the unions rejecting a management offer.
The current contract expires on September 15. There are also
worries over Russia's Norilsk being able to work without
disruptions, they said.
This helped offset a 396-tonne stock rise, and last business
was at $7,600 a tonne, up $40 from the previous kerb.
Stock movements were supportive for the zinc market, with a
7,175-tonne drawdown underpinning prices throughout. Last kerb
trade was at $1,025, up $8.
Tin similarly benefitted from being oversold, and edged away
from the $6,100 level to end the kerb at a steady $6,140 a
tonne. Lead was quiet, and traded last at $814, down just $1.
The alloy market was quiet, and closed the morning at a
stable $1,240/44.
