The market drifted near unchanged for much of the day, but prices spiraled lower late in the session amid widespread speculative liquidation. December futures hit an early high of $1,375, but after once again failing below resistance at $1,380, the market quickly retreated. Most-active December delivery fell $8 a tonne on the day, to $1,359, having ranged from $1,355 to $1,375. Second-month March was down $6, to $1,394, while the remaining months also eased $6. The day's volume was estimated at 3,336 lots. Dealers said continued uncertainty about the size of the Ivorian harvest confined cocoa prices to a relatively narrow, $30 range. While chartists did not rule out a sudden move outside the $1,350-1,380 span, they said only fresh crop news could provide the market with a more decisive direction. 241047 MET sep 96
