But floor sources said industry-related selling trimmed earlier gains, and kept the benchmark December contract below key resistance at $1,370-$1,373 a tonne. December settled at $1,363 a tonne, up $20 on the day, after ranging from $1,369 to $1,347. Spot September finished $20 higher at $1,342, while the remaining months ended up $9 to $14. Traders said after posting losses the last three sessions, the market had begun to look a bit technically oversold. Fundamentally, Refco Inc analyst Ann Prendergast said a crop report by UK commodity house ED&F Man released Thursday may have buoyed the market. Man said grindings in the five largest processing nations rose over 12 percent in the second quarter of 1996, and estimated that grindings will increase by six percent this season, the highest growth rate since 1988/89. "The grindings increase indicates strong consumption," said Prendergast. She also noted that ahead of winter, sales of cocoa are likely to pick up. In the September cocoa report, Man forecast a world supply surplus in the 1995/96 season of 36,000 tonnes, up from its May projection of a 2,000-tonne surplus. Man pegged total 1995/96 Ivorian output at a record 1.125 million tonnes, up from its previous forecast of 1.10 million and against 1994/95's harvest of 876,000. On the charts, traders pegged the next level of December resistance at last Friday's intraday high of $1,379, while support was seen near $1,345. Volume reached an estimated 4,905 lots.
