Slow going on LME, most metal markets flat
LONDON, Aug 28 (Reuter) - The going was slow again on the
London Metal Exchange (LME) on Wednesday morning as the seasonal
summer lull continued to keep markets dormant in well-trodden
ranges.
"It's the summer and August is a quiet month at the best of
times," said one trader. "This year has been no exception."
But signs of weakness emerged on nearby copper spreads, with
cash narrowing to around $32 above three month prices from $37
on Tuesday afternoon.
Three month values were static in very thin conditions,
finishing the morning kerb session at $1,944 a tonne, unchanged
from Tuesday's afternoon kerb close.
Earlier on Wednesday workers at Codelco's Salvador mine in
Chile voted to go on strike from Saturday to demand wage
increases. Codelco has yet to decide whether it will resume
talks with the miners.
But with output at 85,000 tonnes a year, LME traders said
the mine was too small to have much of an impact on prices.
Values were expected to hold in a broad range between $1,900
and $1,970 in the medium term, with bank selling emerging
towards the top end of the band and bank buying at the lower
end.
Dealers also noted light trade buying on copper price dips
this week.
Spreads weakened, but dealers warned that volatility could
quickly return to nearby differentials. This was particularly
true ahead of the September options declaration next Wednesday
and the September prompt date later in the month, they
explained.
Business in other base metals was sluggish.
Aluminium idled sideways in a narrow range, finishing the
session $3 higher at $1,485.
Nickel edged back $10 to $7,330, pressured lower by light
speculative selling.
Lead snapped higher, rising $8 to $803 by the end of the
morning kerb, partly on Far Eastern buying and short-covering.
Zinc also moved higher, rising $1.50 to $1,026.50 in thin
trade. Physical traders said European business continues to
suffer from the summer slowdown, but stocks may continue to fall
in the region as material makes its way to the more buoyant U.S.
market.
Tin was last indicated at $6,170/80 from $6,175.
Alloy was last quoted at $1,285/88 against $1,275/80 at
Tuesday's afternoon kerb close.
