Base metals mostly edge lower on stagnant LME
LONDON, Aug 27 (Reuter) - Base metals trade remained
stagnant on Tuesday morning on the London Metal Exchange (LME),
with most markets maintaining recent ranges as dealers returned
from a long weekend.
The LME was closed on Monday for a UK public holiday,
meaning stock data was not released on Tuesday. The next report
will be on Friday.
"It has been very quiet, and the copper market is completely
featureless," said one trader.
"Aluminium did make a six-week low at one stage, but volumes
were again incredibly light," he added.
One dealer reported a low trade of $1,467 a tonne for three
months aluminium against Friday's afternoon kerb close of
$1,479. Stop loss selling below support at $1,475/80 triggered
the move before light scale down trade buying emerged.
The market ended the morning session at $1,475, down $4.
Some dealers expected further losses in the short term, with
the big target pegged at $1,450/55 support. But longer term the
outlook was more bullish.
"Long term I am friendly towards the market, but I still
think we need to flush out some near term longs first," said a
trader. Another pegged first resistance around $1,500.
Copper also edged lower against a background of easier
nearby spreads. Three month futures finished the morning kerb at
$1,944, down $5, while cash narrowed to around $38 above three
month values from $42 on Friday.
Technically the market looked set to remain between $1,920
and $1,950 in the short term and between $1,900 and $1,970 in
the longer term.
Dealers were closely monitoring events at Phelp Dodge's
Chino mine in New Mexico and Codelco's Salvador mine in Chile.
Wage and contract talks at the mines are ongoing, opening up
the possibility of industrial action and output disruptions.
But some traders played down the chances of disruptions.
"We don't think either will blow up into anything
signficant," said one.
Other base metals mostly followed copper and aluminium
slightly lower.
Lead eased $4 to $803 but held support at $800. Nickel fell
to $7,370 from $7,425 on light profit-taking into last week's
gains. Tin was slow, gaining $5 to $6,175 while zinc rose $2 to
$1,025. Alloy eased $10 to $1,275.
