Nevertheless, most metals remained planted in the plus column and favouring the upside. Copper is close to its current range ceiling, premiums for nearby dates continue to tighten, and there are short-term supply disruptions, traders said. "It (copper) is pausing for breath - it was too much to hope for that it would get above $1,970 straight away," one said. Friday's LME warehouse stock increase of 3,600 tonnes, a double return, was construed as a relatively small rise, and with workers at Codelco's Salvador operations to strike this weekend the market initially extended Thursday's gains. Also, cash/threes continued to widen with the backwardation at $55/58 against mid-week levels near $30. Early September dates to the September prime date showed premiums as well as the market geared up for September option declarations next Wednesday. But the advance stalled in the rings some $5 under the $1,970 target, with final kerb business at $1,963, still up $4 a tonne from Thursday's afternoon kerb. In the short-term the market has the potential to move above $1,970 and quickly run up to $2,000 and $2,020, given possible tightness and the supply concerns, traders added. Copper's firmness rubbed off on the rest of the complex, although the other metals similarly stalled during the official rings as business was generally low-key. Aluminium was only marginally higher, as the $1,500 level proved a difficult hurdle to overcome. Last kerb trade was at $1,500, a $3 advance. Nickel pushed up, following on from Thursday, with the market cautiously eyeing upcoming labour talks at Inco's Manitoba facilities. But there was selling at $7,500, with the market ending the morning at $7,480, a $55 gain from Thursday. Tin spurted higher during the kerb when some buy-stops were triggered above $6,250 with prices concluding the session at $6,285, up $70. Lead generally held above $800, helped by uncertainty over whether there will be supply problems because of the strike at the Tsumeb smelter in Namibia. It closed the kerb at a steadier $806/807. Zinc faltered at $1,030, but sentiment was modestly improved by Thursday's news of lower production at Noranda Brunswick. Prices finished the kerb at a little changed $1,029.50. Alloy was marked higher with primary, standing at $1,290/1,300 a tonne, compared with a previous $1,293. FRANCUSKA BURZA KOVINA - 29. kolovoza 1996.
