LME markets subdued at midsession, copper dips
LONDON, Aug 13 (Reuter) - Base metal markets were in a
subdued frame of mind on Tuesday, with most metals trending
lower in line with copper which fell under support, traders
said.
Copper business was low-key throughout the morning session,
with prices eventually piercing support at $1,920 a tonne on
scattered trade sales and cash offers in thin conditions.
Declines below $1,920 were not extended, however, and the
market seems set to range-trade in the short term. Last kerb
business was at $1,919, a $6 loss from Monday's kerb.
Copper stocks rose by 5,225 tonnes, much as expected,
maintaining the recent inventory trend and inducing little
reaction. Spread backwardations continued to soften marginally,
with cash/threes at $85/90.
Aluminium remained resilient above the $1,500 level despite
copper's late morning decline. But as the physical market is
slumbering there is little likelihood of significant price
strength in the short-term. Prices were $4 higher at $1,508.
There was little excitement in the lead and zinc markets,
with inventory data having little influence.
"It is the middle of the summer holidays - it's quiet, which
is only to be expected," one trader said.
Final business in lead was at $823, down $7 from Monday,
while zinc drifted back to $1,032, against a previous $1,035.50.
Tin was featureless with light business taking place in a
narrow range. Prices ended the session at $6,140/50, down $15.
Nickel sagged under the $7,100 level in dull conditions, but
again did not extend the decline, finishing the kerb at $7,095,
down $70. Alloy held at a stable $1,295/1,300 a tonne.
