However, a rather weak undertone was again discernible on several markets, traders said. Although many mills are believed to have substantial quantities of cotton still to cover for shipment during the first half of next year, demand remains of a selective nature, they added. Only the cheapest offers in circulation appear to generate any real buying interest, as mills generally remain confident that supplies will be ample to meet their requirements over the coming months. The indications of accumulating supplies of Central Asian cotton at Baltic ports were seen as evidence to support a bearish view of prices. 021215 MET dec 97
