They said the market was wieghed down by a bearish technical picture amid a background of ample supply. "The trade involvement we saw yesterday continued today," said Texas A&M cotton marketing specialist Carl Anderson. "It's a weak market. We're in the middle of the harvest and there's a good supply of cotton." Traders said the most-active March contract slid through its previous lifetime low of 71.30 cents per lb and touched off light sell-stops, sinking to a new contract low of 71.01 cents. By the close, March stood at 71.22 cents, down 0.34 cent. It reached an intraday high of 71.69 cents. With the December contract going into notice period today with open interest of 4,638 lots, traders said some market participants continued to liquidate or rolling over December contracts into forward months. December finished up 0.08 cent per lb at 70.40 cents, while the rest of the board closed unchanged to down 0.39 cent. Underscoring robust supply worldwide, the International Cotton Advisory Committee in its November report raised its forecast for 1997/98 world cotton production to 19.75 million tonnes from 19.65 million tonnes estimated in October. The ICAC also raised its forecast for 1997/98 world cotton ending stocks to 9.70 million tonnes from 9.45 million tonnes last month to reflect higher production as well as lower consumption and exports. Traders said the monthly U.S. Census Bureau consumption report for October, released before today's opening bell, was viewed as neutral and had little impact on the market. The Census Bureau reported that factory consumption of domestic and foreign cotton came in at 872,086 bales in October, down from 1,101,672 bales the previous month and compared with 834,217 bales in October 1996. Based on the Census Bureau figures, the National Cotton Council of America put U.S. factory consumption of domestic and foreign cotton at a seasonally adjusted rate at 11.448 million 480-lb bales in October, down from a revised 11.524 million bales in September. An estimated 15,000 lots changed hands on the day, down from Thursday's official total of 24,873 lots. 241046 MET nov 97
