Merino fleece was mixed, with 19 microns two percent dearer, 20/21m one percent dearer, 22/23m 0.5 percent cheaper, 24m up to one percent cheaper, 25m unchanged and 26m slightly cheaper. Merino skirtings were one percent dearer. In crossbreds, 27m was 0.5 percent dearer, 28m two percent dearer, 29m one percent dearer, 30m 0.5 percent cheaper and 31m slightly dearer. In cardings, lambs were fully firm, locks slightly dearer and crutchings unchanged. WI said Japanese interests and Western Europe were principal buyers with good support from most sectors of the trade. Of the 21,960 bales offered, 7.7 percent were passed in. There has been some home trade business at highly competitive prices but although the industry in general is keeping busy there are some anxieties about the future. Traders said that it would only take a modest retail downturn to prompt local resistance to price increases which may occur if overseas wool markets rise or import costs increase as a result of currency developments. The market has been helped by recent strength in Australian merino prices but increasing supplies may check any market strength in the near future. 111103 MET sep 97
