Otherwise, there are stirrings of interest and activity as deliveries begin to go out again. What is still lacking is a major buying movement in wool textiles. Holidays are a factor but so is market confidence. Australia opened the full selling season uncertainly and then prices dropped sharply. They recovered some firmness late last week and this was maintained this week, with prices just managing to edge ahead. New Zealand and British wool prices were firm to a little dearer. The main uncertainty affecting prices is currency. Sterling after a prolonged period of strength that hurt the export trade in wool textiles has shown signs of an about-turn which is raising some hopes of better demand from overseas markets in due course. But this will be a long haul and problems for the UK have been accompanied by gains for Continental Europe. The currency reversal has caused price rises for those close to imported wool costs and those in the home market aware of what a further currency move would mean have been more interested, but noone identifies anything like a buying movement. 151802 MET aug 97
