Merino fleece was mostly cheaper, with 19 micron slightly cheaper, 20/21/22m one percent cheaper, 23/25/26m 1.5 percent cheaper and 24m slightly dearer, while merino skirtings were fully firm. In crossbreds, 27/28m were one percent cheaper, 29m 0.5 percent cheaper, 30m slightly dearer and 31m slightly cheaper, with cardings generally unchanged. WI said buying saw general competition with most sectors of the trade active. Of the 26,334 bales offered, 15.2 percent were passed in. Currency volatility meant that Australian wool prices were effectively softer again after their gain of one dollar and direction was lacking. Locally, traders returning from holidays and meeting pressure for deliveries looked to wool sales before changing prices. Sterling was not regaining much ground after falling last week and this lessened competeitive pressure from the European continent. But currency crisis in Asia, stock market turbulence and prospects of interest rate rises in Germany and elsewhere discouraged confident buying in such markets as were back from holiday. 211031 MET aug 97
