Merino fleece dropped, with 19/21/25 microns two percent down, 20m 1.5 percent down, 22m 3.5 percent down, 23m 2.5 percent down, 24m up to three percent down and 26m one percent cheaper. Merino skirtings of 19m were slightly cheaper, with 20/21m one percent down and 22m up to two percent cheaper. In crossbreds, 27m was 0.5 percent cheaper, 28m slightly cheaper, 29m slightly dearer and 30/31m up to one percent cheaper. In cardings, both centres reported a generally unchanged market compared to last sales in each. WI said Western Europe and Japanese interests were principal buyers with good support from most sectors of the trade. Of the 29,551 bales offered, 12.2 percent were passed in. The industry mourned Maurice Grass, a leading figure for many years in UK textiles who died last week. Grass moved from the Illingworth,Morris group to take charge at the British Wool Marketing Board and saw it through before he retired from government-subsidized support to an independent marketing role. 061008 MET aug 97
