Volume was moderate to heavy, with about 13,500 lots changing hands, one analyst said. Flour sources noted fund and speculative buying with buy stops being hit above 75.00 and 75.25 cents, basis December. There was also a lack of selling. Analysts said the market was waiting for Thursday's weekly export data and the U.S. Department of Agriculture August 12 crop report. Analysts' estimates for the 1997/98 cotton crop range 17.47 to 18.15 million bales with most projections clustered around 18 million bales. Smith Barney senior vice president David Brandon said on Wednesday he put his estimate at 17.97 million bales. In July, USDA estimated this year's cotton crop at 18.00 million bales, down from 18.94 million bales in 1996/97 (Aug/July). Most active December rose 0.70 cent to 75.40 cents a lb while the rest of the board was 0.60 to 0.72 cent up. 071021 MET aug 97
