The drop took the indicator below 700 cents a kg for the first time since late May. Merino fleece was mostly cheaper, with 19/21 microns 1.5 percent down, 20m two percent down, 22/25m one percent down, 23m 2.5 percent down, 24m slightly down and 26m 0.5 percent dearer. Merino skirtings of 19/20m were firm but those of 21/22m were slightly cheaper. In crossbreds, 27/28m were 0.5 percent cheaper, 29m 1.5 percent cheaper and 30/31m 0.5 percent dearer. In cardings, lambs were unchanged with locks and crutchings firm. WI said Western Europe and Japanese interests were principal buyers with good support from most sectors of the trade. Of the 28,473 bales offered, 17.8 percent were passed in. The industry mourned Maurice Grass, a leading figure for many years in UK textiles who died last week. Grass moved from the Illingworth,Morris group to take charge at the British Wool Marketing Board and saw it through before he retired from government-subsidized support to an independent marketing role. 071022 MET aug 97
