This was the highest level since late August 1995. Merino fleece was dearer, with 19/21 microns slightly dearer, 20m 0.5 percent dearer, 22/24m 1.5 percent dearer, and 23/25/26m two percent dearer. Merino skirtings were up to two percent dearer. In crossbreds, 27/28/29m were up to two percent dearer, with 30/31m 1.5 percent dearer, with crossbred skirtings one percent dearer. In cardings, lambs were unchanged, locks one percent dearer, and crutchings slightly dearer. WI said Japanese interests including China were principal buyers with good support from Western Europe. Of the 24,068 bales offered, 4.7 percent were passed in. Traders said that companies were suffering from sterling's strength reducing the competitivity of their product abroad and, on the home market, it made imports more competitive.
