By the close May/Jun sellers were $20 a tonne down while forwards were $5 lower. May/Jun rose sharply last week on reports of shipment delays from origin. Most positions were trading as much as $20 below Tuesday's asking prices with shippers the main sellers while consumers and dealers snapped up material at bargain prices. Some traders said the producers had been overplaying the typhoon damage and the shipment delays for some time and expect further sharp falls in prices. "There is a feeling in the market the whole tight supply situation has been overplayed and it's time for a shake out," said one trader. "Some people thought last week that supplies were tighter then they are, but they can now see that things are not as bad as others would like them to believe," said another trader. In active trading May/Jul traded at $645 and $640. Jun/Jul at $637.50 and $635, Jul/Aug at $635, $632.50 and $630, Aug/Sep at $630 and $625 and Sep/Oct at $630 a tonne cif. Palm oil closed $2.50 to $5 higher across the board with most buyers sidelined. Traders said buyers had been disappointed by this morning's rise in the Malaysian futures against a background of a lower Chicago market. They had been hoping for a lower Chicago opening this afternoon to kick-start business but when the U.S. market opened higher interest evaporated. Soft oils close with soy oil 0.75 to 0.25 guilders up while rape oil was 0.50 guilders higher to 0.25 guilders lower. Traders said the market was being supported by the higher Chicago futures and tight supplies, which were said to have been triggered by Chinese buying. In light trading Nov/Jan soy oil fetched 101.75 guilders and rape oil 103.00 and 102.75 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill for Aug/Oct.
