Palm oil closed steady with the higher close in Malaysia supporting prices. But business in all sectors was hampered by the absence of many players attending a vegetable oil convention in Budapest. Higher markets in Asia gave some support to prices with palm oil $2.50 to $7.50 up following a rebound in Malaysia towards the close, ahead of the Malaysian Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority's (PORLA) report due for release at 0430 GMT on Thursday. In his last estimate for April, Malaysian private forecaster Ivan Wong's put local palm oil output at 728,000 tonnes, 6.6 percent over March production. Wong projected stocks at 695,000 tonnes compared with PORLA's figure of 689,633 tonnes at end-March. On Tuesday Malaysian plantation houses put April production eight percent over that in March. Dutch soy oil closed 0.25 to 0.50 guilders lower as sellers tried to tempt buyers after the lower soy oil futures opening in Chicago, but by the close no business had been reported. Rape oil finished 0.50 guilders up to unchanged after Aug/Oct traded at 104 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Crude palm oil sellers were $5 to $7.50 up at the close while products were $2.50 to $5 higher with no further business reported. Coconut oil finished $2.50 up to $5 down while palmkernel oil was unchanged to $2.50 up, but buyers remained firmly dug in around $10 below the asking prices.
