The benchmark July contract ended down $9 a tonne, at $1,452, after trading from $1,462 to $1,444. Second-month September fell $10, to close at $1,481, while the back months slumped $7 to $12. Cocoa prices took a downturn at the outset, pressured by speculative liquidation, dealers said. The latest CFTC Commitment of Traders report, which showed an increase in speculative long positions (non-commercial and nonreportable) of some 4,000 lots in the two weeks ended May 20, may have weighed on sentiment, they said. Scale-down buying by the trade at $1,450 and lower basis the July contract trimmed gains and prevented a test of support at $1,443-$1,438. But after the first two hours of trading, dealers said market activity nearly came to a standstill. "After the first flurry, it died," said one trader. "The selling dried up, the buyers didn't pursue and we sat." Technically, traders continued to peg July near-term support at $1,443-$1,438. On the upside, resistance was seen at Friday's close of $1,461, followed by $1,471, Friday's high. Turnover reached an estimated 3,730 lots, including more than 900 AAs (againts actuals), traders said. 281029 MET may 97
