Short-covering lifted prices off the lows by the close, they added. Most-active July ended 0.50 cent weaker at 71.90 cents per lb, having ranged from 72.95 to 71.50 cents, a life-of-contract low. New-crop December finished down 0.11 cent to 74.82 cents, while the rest of the board ended 0.20 to 0.05 lower. Volume was estimated at 11,000 lots compared with Friday's official 6,498 lots. While a short-covering had been expected to ignite a rally, market analysts now believe that prices could continue their downward trend. "The funds remain short with no reason to cover," John Moss, a cotton analyst with Allendale, said. Technically, a close above 74.00 cents basis July for at least two consecutive days could prompt some of the funds to begin covering short positions. "The market is getting oversold, but unless we close above 74.00 cents for a couple of days, there is no reason to go higher," Moss said. Support was seen at psychologically key 70.00 cents.
