"The fact that the hard red winter wheat has been hurt is not going to impact cotton," analyst Sharon Johnson of Frank Schneider & Co, Inc said. "We had a good close on Friday and today we had follow-through speculative shortcovering." Speculators were mostly short in the July contract and this should rise to about 76.00 to 77.00 cents a lb on more follow-through shortcovering, Johnson added. CFTC's Commitments of Traders report released late Friday indicated that speculators held 24,017 short positions and 8,244 long positions in week ended April 8. Spot May NYCE cotton settled 0.67 cent higher at 72.36 cents, while July went out 0.56 cent higher at 74.04 cents. Volume was estimated at 9,000 lots compared to Friday's 10,508 lots. Some floor sources, however, said cotton would draw strength from higher soybean and wheat prices which rose sharply on Monday due to frost in growing areas. 151043 MET apr 97
