A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON TUESDAY, JUNE 14

ZAGREB, June 14 (Hina) - Today's daily Vjesnik carries on the front page an article on results of European elections under the headline "Europe swerves to the right." The paper writes that the right retained the predominance in Germany and Portugal and it gained the predominance in Spain, Italy and France, while it was defeated in Great Britain. Vjesnik brings a report on presenting the program on the reconstruction and development of the County of Istria drew up by the County's committee of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). The program had been made by HDZ officials and about 30 intellectuals from Istria. The paper carries an open letter of the Trade Union of Health Services forwarded to Prime Minister Nikica Valentic in connection with a Constitutional Court ruling on the annulment of salary coefficients in health services, and with an offered and rejected resignation of Health Minister Andrija Hebrang. The Trade Union upbraids Minister Hebrang for "refusing to accept the ruling of the Constitutional Court and setting conditions that would put the Government in a position to go against the rule of law." Ahead of negotiations between the Croatian authorities and representatives of rebel Serbs, scheduled for 16 June 1994 in the National Park of Plitvice Lakes, another Zagreb daily Vecernji List writes: "There is no doubt that the docile Martic (self-proclaimed president of the so-called Serb Krajina) will conduct the Plitvice talks in obedience to orders from Belgrade." The paper reports on results of an opinion poll of the freedom of press in Croatia conducted among readers. Forty-two percent of polled persons think that there is a sufficient freedom of press in Croatia, while thirty-two percent estimate that the freedom of press is insignificant. Forty-four percent of interviewees trust journalists more than politicians, while 1.3 percent trust politicians more. 141322 MET jun 94
