UN IN BOSNIA WAITING FOR INSTRUCTIONS FROM SECURITY COUNCIL

SARAJEVO, March 23 (Hina) - One of the two cannons seized by Serb irregulars from a UN-controlled weapons storage area yesterday, has been returned, the UN in Sarajevo said. UN officials were still negotiating the return of the other cannon with the Serb side. The situation in the greeater Sarajevo area was calm but tense. UN observers had counted 84 detonations in the past 24 hours. Six mortar shells landed very near a UN base in the Zetra neighbourhood in northern Sarajevo, spokesman Alexander Ivanko said. The attack was carried out from Serb positions, he said, adding that there had been no casualties. The attack did not elicit any response from UNPROFOR. Ivanko rejected allegations that UNPROFOR was doing nothing in Bosnia. "We are waiting for instructions from the Security Council about changes in the mandate," he said. "In the meantime, the old mandate is still in force and we are doing what we can," he asserted. He confirmed that the UN Force Commander, Gen. Janvier, would report on the situation on the ground at a meeting with representatives of countries whose soldiers were taking part in the UN peace operation, tomorrow in New York. Meanwhile, UN officials were trying to keep in touch with the Bosnian Government and the Serb authorities. According to Ivanko, the political representatives of both sides agreed to renew an earlier anti-sniping agreement. After that, the UN expected both sides to embark on negotiations on the opening of the Sarajevo airport to humanitarian flights. In the meantime, the UN Commander in Sarajevo, Gen. Gobillard, was trying to bring Bosnian and Serb military representatives to the negotiating table. (hina) jn as 231323 MET may 95
