WARNS
NEW YORK, May 20 (Hina) - The United States was concerned over
reports that armed Serb troops from western Slavonia had been given
the status of refugees in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the US representative
in the Security Council said yesterday.
The Bosnian Government protested with UN special envoy,
Yasushi Akashi, who allegedly replied that the UN had not allowed
heavily armed Serb troops to cross the Sava River into Bosnia -
only soldiers bearing sidearms had been allowed through.
According to New York diplomatic circles, the US seriously
reminded UN officials of their obligation to respect the
sovereignty of all member states, at a Security Council session
held behind closed doors.
At the same session, the US representative drew attention to
the fact that UN officials had not requested Sarajevo's approval
for the entrance of Serbs who had left Croatia after the western
Slavonia fighting.
The UN was also urged to verify media reports that Yugoslav
authorities had denied entrance to about a thousand Serbs from
western Slavonia.
