UN IN SECTOR WEST ON PIPELINE, ZAGREB-TOVARNIK RAILWAY

PAKRAC, Jan 31 (Hina) - UNPROFOR officials today told reporters about the preparations for the opening of the Pakrac oil pipeline and the Zagreb-Tovarnik (Serbian border) railway under the Dec 2 Economic Agreement with Knin Serbs. The press conference, held in Pakrac in the middle of the disengagement zone, was also attended by a Banja Luka TV station crew and the Western Slavonia Radio, the latter based in Serb- occupied Sector West. The Croats and the Serbs were unable to agree on which of them should supervise the waterworks in the disengagement zone, UN Civil Department CHief in Sector West, Keshone Mandiar, told reporters. The Croats agreed to cede the control of the piping from Donja Sumetlica to Brusnica Bridge to the Serbs, but the Serbs objected to the Croats controlling a water reservoir overlooking Pakrac. Mandiar expected the waterworks to open before the summer. UN spokesperson in Sector West, Susan Manuel, reported on the results of a helicopter inspection of the Zagreb-Tovarnik railway, carried out jointly by UNPROFOR, Croatian and Serb experts. The railway needed to be cleared of mines at several points, and several damaged spots, including the Paklenica bridge, needed repair. Electric lines and signal devices suffered the greatest damage, Manuel said, adding that the railway could be operational again in two months. Croatian Government Commissioner for relations with UNPROFOR in Sector West told reporters that UNPROFOR had not yet deployed the additional 100 soldiers on the Pakrac-Pozega road, as had been agreed two months ago.
