"I visited Erdut and Vukovar and talked to the local
authorities - Milovanovic, Drzajic and Gen. Loncar," Hewitt said.
"I feel encouraged by what is going on and the people's
willingness to enable the functioning of the Temporary
Administration during the interim period," he said.
He stressed the need for ensuring the return of all refugees
to their homes - Croats to eastern Slavonia and Serbs to wesetern
Slavonia.
"I am optimistic because I see the beginning of the end of a
long process," he said.
He urged reporters from both sides to help create a positive
climate.
He also stressed the importance of resolving the issue of
missing persons and prisoners, to which the interntional community
was committed.
Asked whether there had been any new initiatives at today's
talks with the Serb side, Hewitt answered in the affirmative.
"I drew their attention to the importance of the organized
return of Croats within the framework of pilot projects," he said.
