SARAJEVO, Feb 22 (Hina) - The chief commander of the international
Implementation Force (IFOR) in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Admiral Leighton
Smith on Thursday asked that the discussion on the lifting of
sanctions that had been imposed against the Bosnian Serbs be
postponed for the next 48 hours so that it could be checked whether
the Serb military and political leadership in Pale was ready to
cooperate in the implementation of the peace agreement. #L#
The head of the IFOR main headquarters, General William Carter
said the IFOR was waiting for an official confirmation from Pale
authorities that they would cooperate in joint military and civil
commissions. 'So far, we have only news reports saying that such a
decision had been reached at the last night's session of the
Bosnian Serb Parliament. We need an official confirmation', Carter
added.
The request to postpone the lifting of sanctions was sent this
morning by Admiral Smith to the chief commander of NATO forces in
Europe, General George Joulwan. Yesterday afternoon, the IFOR
informed the public that conditions for sanctions to be lifted had
been created, but Admiral Smith later decided to change his
decision.
