ONLY ORGANISED VISITS TO UN-ADMINISTERED CEMETERIES PERMITTED

VUKOVAR, Oct 29 (Hina) - Displaced persons are to visit 42 cemeteries in the Croatian Danube river region, which the UNTAES has described as locations of low risk, in groups and in an organised manner on All Saints' Day on 1 November. The displaced persons are to arrive at the cemeteries in busses because passes for vehicles or temporary passes for the Danubian area would not be valid on 1 November, the UNTAES said in a statement Wednesday. Transport to the cemeteries has been organised by county coordinators in the cooperation with municipal authorities and the Croatian government Office for Refugees and Displaced Persons. The regular bus service will function as usual. Recalling that UNTAES and the Croatian government had agreed that it was important that the visit of the displaced persons be safe and organised, the UNTAES said in the statement that Transitional Police Forces and UNTAES civilian police would be deployed at the locations to be visited. Local Serb leaders held a constitutive session of the Vukovar Trust Establishment Committee on Tuesday at which they said that Serb Orthodox faithful also celebrated 1 November as All Saints' Day, so there was a possibility that Serbs and Croats could meet at the cemeteries. Members of the Trust Establishment Committee, in particular, Vukovar's mayor Vladimir Stengl and Croatian Parliament MP and president of the Serb Independent Democratic Party (SDSS), Vojislav Stanimirovic, called upon all persons planning to visit the cemeteries to avoid incidents and conduct themselves in a dignified and appropriate manner.
