ZAGREB, Oct 22 (Hina) - Croatia's ombudsman Ante Klaric on
Wednesday forwarded a letter to the UN Transitional Administration
for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srijem (UNTAES)
suggesting that it should "ensure visits on 1 and 2 November to all
cemeteries in the UN-administered parts of Croatia."
"In the tradition of the Croatian population", the letter said,
"the respect for passed ancestors is deeply rooted, as especially
evidenced on All Souls' Day and All Saints' Day, 1 and 2 November."
"We believe", Klaric's letter continued, "that enabling persons
who are or were residents in the area under your administration to
visit cemeteries would greatly contribute to understanding and
tolerance among people."
"I also suggest that you clear of mines possibly mined cemeteries,
and if this is not completely possible, that you ensure access to
the Central Cross", the Croatian ombudsman wrote in his letter to
the UNTAES.
