HARVEST CARRIED OUT SUCCESSFULLY IN CROATIA

ZAGREB, Aug 9 (Hina) - The harvest of wheat ended successfully last week in Croatia, and planned amounts of the crop have already been purchased. According to Croatian Agriculture Minister Zlatko Dominikovic, Croatia has enough wheat for this and next year. In Croatia, 884,000 tonnes of wheat have been reaped. Over 600,000 tonnes have been bought in, 570,000 of which was commercial wheat and more than 50,000 tonnes of which will be used for seed. The average yield has been about 4.5 tonnes of wheat per hectare. The purchase of wheat, payment and settlement of credits in kind have been carried out throughout Croatia, including the Croatian Danube river area under the UN Transitional Administration. The entire tied credit for the sowing granted in the Danube river area has been settled by reaped wheat shipped in silos. The food-processing company "Bilje" in the eastern town of Beli Manastir stored more than 5,000 tonnes of wheat, what is the largest amount in the area. The first 'training' of wheat from silos is to begin in Vukovar next week. The agriculture ministry has said that a plan for the autumn sowing include a considerable increase in areas covered by wheat, Swedish turnip and rye. According to the plan, wheat will be sown on 280,000 hectares, Swedish turnip will be sown on 10,500 hectares, and rye on about 3,000 (mostly in Lika, central Croatia). This means that areas covered by sown rye will be enlarged by 100 percent, areas covered by sown Swedish turnip will be enlarged by about 96 percent, whereas areas covered by sown wheat will be enlarged by over 36 percent. Preparations for the gathering of maize are under way. This year's maize crop is expected to be the best in the last ten years. In connection with stimulating cattle breeding and soil cultivation, a new project of granting credits to the fattening of calves has been announced by Minister Dominikovic. The project, under which credits will be given for the fattening between 18,000 and 20,000 calves, should start in about ten days. (hina) jn mš 091750 MET aug 97
