ZAGREB, Dec 7 (Hina) - Members of the National Committee of the
ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party and HDZ MPs at the
Croatian National Sabor (parliament) on Monday afternoon discussed
current issues in Croatia's economic and political life, as well as
the influence of international policy and Croatia's environment on
the development of the country.
It is the estimate of all participants in the discussion that the
HDZ, if it wishes to remain Croatia's centrist party, ought to more
resolutely solve issues troubling the common man.
The issues primarily concern an improvement in the position of
pensioners, unemployment problems through the reorganisation of
economy and the improvement of the standard of living of all
Croatian citizens.
The party stressed that it was for a gradual joining European
integration processes, taking into consideration Croatia's
national and state interests.
The development of economy is a winning combination for Croatia's
accession into the European Union and only then will we be a
partner, not easy prey before the doors of the EU, Minister for
European Integrations, Ljerka Mintas-Hodak said.
Zarko Domljan, vice-president of the Croatian National Sabor,
stressed that new times and new situations are arriving for which we
have to be prepared, when the HDZ might not have such a majority to
be able to make decisions independently.
Both for political ideas and programmes, good marketing is
necessary which would advocate dialogue, avoid harsh words and
unrealistic expectations, Domljan said.
Reconstruction and Development Minister Jure Radic said Croatia
would enable all whose who wish, to return to their homes-
Concerning the recent donors' conference for the reconstruction of
Croatia, Radic said the Croatian government must resolutely say we
are not ready to concede, for example, for tenants' rights to be
granted to those who attacked Croatia.
Ivo Sanader, deputy Foreign Minister, held that the HDZ did not know
how to capitalise its frequently successful policy and this must be
set as a task in 1999, which will be a turning point and introduction
into the new millennium for the HDZ.
Zlatko Canjuga, MP, estimated that the party would next year fully
take control. According to him, tabloids wished to cover up all
negativities that occurred before 1990, and place the
responsibility for problems on the HDZ.
The situation in Croatian society, MP Vera Stanic said, was
concerning. She stressed that the most painful was the realisation
that the people who had laid their lives for the Croatian state were
beginning to lose faith in that state due to various false patriots
and those getting rich by illegal means.
"Let us prevent that, Mr. President," Stanic stressed.
