VUKOVAR, Oct 26 (Hina) - The security situation in the area of Vukovar (eastern Croatia) is very good, regardless of minor incidents in the town, a local police superintendent said in Vukovar on Monday. The police have identified and pressed charges against persons who provoked incidents and tore down an Orthodox cross in Vukovar ten days ago, during the sixth all-Croatian sports competition of Homeland War volunteers, superintendent Josip Grcanac said at today's meeting of the town's Trust Establishment Committee. A Serb committee member, Djordje Macut, said that the security situation as regards Serbs living in suburbs where the reconstruction of Croat houses and return of Croats is underway, is becoming unbearable. According to Macut, a group of people were constantly threatening and disturbing peace and safety of Serbs living in those suburbs. If the situation does not change quickly and perpetrators are not brought to justice, "about hundred domicile Serb families and forty Serb refugee families will leave the area collectively", Macut said. Superintendent Grcanac responded saying that the police were ready to prevent threats or attacks on anyone's life and property, but were not able to do so if victims failed to report such cases. The police have not received any such reports, Grcanac said calling on Serb citizens who live in the said suburbs to fully trust the police and report all incidents. The local Trust Establishment Committee called for tolerance and confidence in Croatian authorities. (hina) rml sp
