SOLIN, Oct 4 (Hina) - Just after 6pm on Sunday, Pope John Paul II
arrived at the Island of Our Lady in Solin.
The delighted youth, catechists, teachers and representatives of
church movements greeted the Holy Father.
About 35,000 young people welcomed the Pope with songs and
accompanying programmes.
Twenty-two years ago the Island of Our Lady was the site of marking
the 1300th anniversary of the conversion of the Croatian people and
1000th anniversary of the death of the Croatian Queen Jelena.
In the 10th century, Queen Jelena had two churches built at the
location where today's church stands: the Church of the Holy Virgin
and the Church of St Stephen.
The remains of Queen Jelena's sarcophagus were discovered on the
Island of Our Lady in 1898. The foundations of the Church of St
Stephen, where she was buried, can be seen from the northern side of
today's church.
