SARAJEVO, June 1 (Hina) - The registration of voters for the
upcoming general elections began over Bosnia-Herzegovina on
Monday.
The elections are to take place on September 12 and 13.
The registration will last until June 27 and is applicable only to
citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina who had not requested to be placed
on voters' lists for last year's local elections, and for those who
have changed their place of residence or have decided to vote in a
municipality other than the one they had voted in in 1996.
Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Mission
chief in Bosnia-Herzegovina Robert Barry and his deputy in charge
of the electoral process, Linda Edgeworth, stressed on Monday that
the 1991 census still remained the basis for the list of voters.
All those whose names are not on the census will have to provide
evidence that they are indeed citizens of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and
the evidence will be examined by OSCE supervisors, Edgeworth said.
Besides 235 registration offices in the country, 35 have been
opened in FR Yugoslavia, and 30 in Croatia.
The registration of voters is conducted by local personnel, but
their work is under close scrutiny of OSCE representatives who had
arrived in Bosnia-Herzegovina specifically for this task.
