ZAGREB, Dec 2 (Hina) - Proceedings from the "CBMTS - Industry I"
symposium held under the title "Ecoterrorism - Chemical and
Biological Warfare Without Chemical and Biological Weapons" in the
southern Croatian town of Dubrovnik and Zagreb at the end of 1998,
were presented in Zagreb on Friday.
Attending the presentation were representatives of Croatian
Government institutions and military attaches from several
countries accredited in Croatia.
The proceedings, made up of 72 papers, were completed based on
results of the symposium which was organised by the Croatian
Defence Ministry and an American private company Applied Science
Analysis (ASA).
The symposium was attended by 170 experts from 32 countries and was
accompanied by three demonstration exercises.
The conference focused on the dangers of chemical and biological
warfare without the use of such weapons.
According to Croatian Deputy defence Minister and director of the
symposium, Kresimir Cosic, the conference received very good marks
in expert magazines as it had recognised the dangers of
circumventing the international Convention banning the use of
chemical weapons so as to lead chemical and biological warfare with
unconventional means.
"Unfortunately, Croatia had to directly face this danger in the
Homeland War," Cosic said at the presentation, stressing that it
was the intention of the symposium to underline the possibility of
causing ecological catastrophes by sabotage, terrorism or direct
military attacks on civilian industrial plants manufacturing
chemical or biological products, or which used toxins in the
production process.
The Chemical and Biological Medical Treatment Symposia was spurred
by the ASA company. So far it has participated in the organisation
of six similar symposia in Switzerland, the Czech republic, Egypt
and Croatia.
Co-director of the symposium, vice-president of ASA, Richard
Price, announced that another such symposium could be held in
Zagreb at the beginning of 2001.
He added there was also an idea that an international centre be
established in Croatia to work on issues of danger against
ecological terrorism and fight against such warfare.
