the Zagreb Jewish Community on Monday presented the grandchildren of a Croatian married couple with the certificate "Righteous Among the Nations." The late Mr and Mrs Kumric were proclaimed righteous among nations in May 1999 for saving two Jewish boys during Ustashi persecution in World War Two. The "Righteous Among the Nations" certificate is awarded by Israel to non-Jews who during WW2 risked their lives to help Jews. The Yad Vashem Memorial Centre from Israel presented the certificate to the Kumric couple, who lived in Cerje Nebojse in northern Croatia, for saving two Jewish boys, Artur and Vedran, from the racial laws in the Independent State of Croatia (1941-1945).
