the Navy's (HRM) Commander, Vice Admiral Vid Stipetic, in Split at a
central ceremony of marking the Day of the Croatian Navy, September
18.
The Croatian Navy has celebrated its day on September 18 since 1993
in line of the decree of Croatia's President and chief commander of
armed forces, Franjo Tudjman, who decided so in order to mark 18
September 887 when Prince Branimir had defeated the Venetian Navy
in the Dalmatian waters.
The first unit of the Croatian Navy was established on 12 September
1991.
Addressing the Navy's members lined up in the port of Lora in Split,
Vice Admiral Vid Stipetic stressed that the re-organisation of the
Navy was proceeding at an anticipated speed. Many officers are now
being trained at different schools, and the Navy is spending money
economically, its commander stressed. He called on marines to keep
memory and heritage of the Homeland War.
On behalf of Croatia's President Tudjman, Vice Admiral Davorin Kaic
wished the best to Navy on its day. He said the Navy had given a great
contribution to the victory in the Homeland War and Croatia's
achievements since 1990.
Saying that the Navy will be more and more included into joint
international activities, Kaic said the modernisation should go on
in line with the economic development and admission to
international associations as regards that the Croatian economy is
in a crisis.
On behalf of Defence Minister Pavao Miljavac and the Croatian
Army's headquarters chief-of-staff, Davor Domazet, Lieutenant-
General Petar Stipetic addressed the gathered at the celebration.
He recalled the Navy's role in the Homeland War adding that now
marines are carrying out their tasks in the peace time. We shall
continue to modernise the Croatian Navy in order that it may be
equal with other navies in the region and approach standards of
navies in the developed countries, he added.
A delegation of the Croatian Navy this morning laid wreaths and lit
candles at the Split cemetery of Lovrinac paying tribute to fallen
soldiers and sailors in the Homeland War.
Local authorities, military envoys of the Slovene Navy and other
guests were also present Saturday's ceremony.
