On August 12, the centre called "Apel" gathering families of
missing and detained Croatian soldiers and civilians, initiated
this campaign of lighting candles every Thursday in order to mark
the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Geneva Conventions.
These associations wanted to express their exasperation at the fact
that to date no light has been shed on the fate of 1,687 people. In
addition, about 30,000 people were killed and 50,000 wounded in the
war.
The Croatian Movement for Life and Family also forwarded a letter to
the ICRC President Cornelio Sommaruga reminding him of 121
unearthed mass graves in Croatia.
