I am very happy to be in Croatia again, said Samaranch adding that it
was his tenth visit to this country.
"This means that Croatia is very important in the world sport and
that it has long tradition and reputation of an excellent organiser
of great sports events, from the 1979 Mediterranean Games in Split,
the International University Games and the 1990 European
Championships in Athletics, and now the World Military Games which
commence today, he added.
The IOC President pointed to very good ties with the international
council for military sport (CISM).
We absolutely support military sport since it considerably
contributes to peace as one of basic principles of the Olympic
movement. All armies in the world must be a guarantee for peace,
whereas the military games contribute much to this general
objective, Samaranch said.
He was accompanied by the CISM President Brigadier Gianni Gola, the
director of the Institution of the Second World Military Games,
Lieutenant General Josip Lucic and the head of the Croatian Olympic
Committee, Antun Vrdoljak.
Samaranch is to attend this evening's ceremony of opening the
Military Games in Zagreb.
