ZAGREB, July 23 (Hina) - A Croatian Radio-Television spokesman on
Friday told Hina Croatian Television (HTV) will respect the
reduction from nine to four minutes per hour for commercials, in
line with the Law on Telecommunications, which comes into force on
July 27.#L#
Certain steps have already been taken to that end, Kresimir Macan
said, adding HTV was holding talks with advertisers and all
interested parties to adapt broadcasting with programme and
legislative regulations.
If the new decree was to remain in force until the end of the year,
HTV would lose DM50 million, Macan said. HTV would also be forced to
raise the subscriber's fee to compensate for the losses unless the
telecommunications law was amended in September, he added.
According to the spokesman, in 1998 HTV earned some DM100 million
from commercials. This year's earnings could be reduced by half,
because of a reduced demand for commercials and the reduced time
limit envisaged for them.
HTV had already sold an average 7.5 minutes per hour for commercials
during prime time until the end of the year, Macan said. The new
decree however forced HTV to cancel and break contracts for 3.5
minutes of commercial broadcasting which had already been paid.
The average price for commercial broadcasting during prime time is
DM256 per second, resulting after the lost 3.5 minutes in a DM53,000
loss per evening, i.e. DM1.54 million lost per month, the spokesman
concluded.
