A school reconstruction project in eastern Croatia, which the
Reconstruction Ministry is implementing as part of a general
reconstruction programme, is worth US$18.5 million and covers 21
schools in Vukovar-Srijem County and 13 in Osijek-Baranja County.
The Council of Europe Fund takes part in the project via a loan
financing half the project's cost, while the other half is financed
from Croatia's state budget.
Radic said he was sure the project would be completed by year's end.
Talks on extending the project on other formerly war-affected areas
in Croatia will then be possible, he added.
Governor Alomar expressed satisfaction with the progress in the
implementation of the project and the cooperation with Croatia.
The two officials also talked about possibilities of expanding
cooperation between the Croatian government and the Council of
Europe Social Development Fund onto house-building, employment
stimulation, and the reconstruction of local infrastructure among
else. Preliminary talks have already begun. It has been agreed the
Croatian government will prepare data necessary to draft a new
integral approach to the reconstruction and development of
villages.
