ZAGREB, May 18 (Hina) - A Croatian Peasants Alliance (HSS)
delegation failed to reach an agreement on its demands at a Tuesday
meeting with Premier Zlatko Matesa and Agriculture Minister Ivan
Djurkic, the HSS delegation told reporters in Zagreb.
According to HSS president Darko Grivicic, Matesa and Djurkic
frequently pointed out there was no money to meet the peasants'
demands. The Premier however said the issue of exaggerated import
had been solved and that the government will comply with its
obligations by July 15, including those to farmers for last year's
harvest.
The HSS gave the government a three-day deadline to think about the
peasants' demands, the delegation pointed out and announced the
possibility of peasant protests throughout Croatia in the case of
an unsatisfactory government response.
The HSS today organised a protest action with the aim to warn about
the difficult situation in Croatian agriculture.
Peasants demand a ban on the import of products of which there is
sufficient domestic supply, the payment of backlog claims for the
1998 harvest, the purchase of pork at economical prices, the
implementation of a parliamentary decision on financial incentives
and compensation in agriculture and fishing, and an increased
purchase price for this year's wheat harvest.
Protest rallies were today held in the towns of Donji Miholjac,
Popovaca and Djakovo, as well in Medjimurje County, north-west
Croatia, and Vukovar-Srijem County, in the east.
