ZAGREB, May 14 (Hina) - The Serb National Council (SNV) President,
Milorad Pupovac, on Friday voiced great concern over the situation
in the Croatian Danube River Area, whereas the impossibility to
solve promptly and efficiently many problems culminated in protest
rallies staged by Croat returnees to the village of Berak.
Expressing fear that the situation in Slavonia could start getting
out of control, the Serb leader called on Croatia's Government to do
its best to thwart further destabilisation of the situation.
I fear that processes in Slavonia could bring the rebuilding of
confidence, a field where we have achieved the most, into question,
Pupovac told Friday's news conference in Zagreb.
He stressed that the Serb community in that area was absolutely
ready to give its contribution to prevention of the
destabilisation.
He proposed that talks should be held by the help of the National
Committee for the Confidence Building, in order that the situation
might be observed from all aspects.
Pupovac pointed to the seriousness of the problem of exhumations
from mass graves and urged the adequate approach to the issue. He
maintained that individuals should not be allowed to launch such
initiatives or demand something like that by themselves. According
to him, institutions should carry out exhumations whereas
authorities and Serb representatives should discuss the problem.
Pupovac cited as a problem the still vacant post of an assistant to
Croatia's Interior Minister, who should be of the Serb descent.
Speaking about problems in Slavonia, he also pointed to the
replacement of the deputy of Osijek-Baranja County Prefect by a man
contrary to Letter of Intent, arrests and dragging to daylight of
lists of war crimes suspects despite the agreement reached by the
Government, Croatian Serbs and the international community.
Relating to discussions on a new electoral law, Pupovac said he
would insist that the right to vote would be granted to all Serbs who
are Croatia's citizens, no matter whether they are now abroad, in
Bosnia-Herzegovina or Yugoslavia (Serbia/Montenegro) for
instance.
