Minister Jure Radic on Saturday announced that the Law on Areas of
Special State Concern would soon be replaced with a law on
incentives for underdeveloped and scarcely populated areas.
The new law was drawn up by the Ministry of Reconstruction and
Development. It will be sent to the Government in May and the
Croatian National Sabor could adopt it as early as in late May or
June, Radic said in Imotski, southern Croatia, where he met local
officials to discuss problems in the area.
One of the reasons for the adoption of the new law is Croatia's
commitment towards the international community to change the
existing Law on Areas of Special State Concern. The basic
difference between the two legal documents is that according to the
new law, areas enjoying special state concern would no more be
categorised in line with war, but demographic and economic
criteria. This will result in some areas losing the privileged
status while some others will probably be granted such status,
Radic said.
