ZAGREB, Apr 19 (Hina) - The Serb National Council (SNV) on behalf of
the Serb community in Croatia called on Monday on all governments of
UN Security Council member-countries and leading NATO countries to
immediately cease the air strikes against Yugoslavia.
SNV president Milorad Pupovac pointed to the bitterness and concern
of the Serb community in Croatia caused by the extent of the
suffering of innocent Yugoslav people and citizens, regardless of
their national belonging.
Pupovac urged the end of the air strikes in the name of a permanent
commitment against the use of any form of force in the seeking of
solutions for inter-ethnic and inter-state disputes.
Pupovac in particular appealed to the United States government to
stop the air strikes in the interest of human and minority rights,
the prevention of a humanitarian disaster, regional stability and
security, and democratic prospects.
He urged the U.S. government to initiate a diplomatic and political
action, together with the UN, the European Union, and the Russian
Federation.
In a statement released today, the SNV welcomes all initiatives
aimed at the creation of circumstances which will result in a
lasting cease-fire, effective international community engagement
in the establishment and preservation of peace, and the finding of a
political solution to the Albanian community's status in Kosovo,
within the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
The SNV stressed in particular that a final solution to the Kosovo
conflict may be found through the simultaneous respect of the
Albanian community's right to autonomy and the Republic of Serbia's
right to territorial integrity.
The adjustment of those two rights is a right and an obligation, the
SNV said, once again reiterating the necessity of diplomatic and
political action.
