SPLIT/ZAGREB, April 6 (Hina) - Ranko Rapajic, aged 39, wanted by
police due to his involvement in the smuggling of stolen cars,
surrendered voluntarily in Split at 09.35 pm Monday to the 3rd
Police Station in that southern city.
Rapajic was taken to the Split district court, Croatian Interior
Ministry's public relations office reported last night.
An indictment alleges that he, along with Croatian Army Colonel
Zeljko Maglov and Zoran Dozdor, smuggled stolen cars from abroad
via Croatia in Bosnia-Herzegovina from April 1995 to September
1997. This organised group led by Colonel Maglov abused authorities
of military police (since some of them were members of that police)
to smuggle vehicles to neighbouring Bosnia.
In September 1997, Maglov, Rapajic and Dozdor were arrested and
taken into custody. After being released on bail in January 1998,
the three men jumped bail. Warrants for their arrests were
subsequently issued. Maglov was captured on 10 January 1999 and
Dozdor surrendered to police on 20 February 1999.
The attorney of Rapajic said she expected that the trial of Maglov,
Dozdor and Rapajic would commence at Split County court in about one
month.
She added that she would request that Ranko Rapajic be remanded on
bail until the start of the trial.
